Learn Basics of Tabla- Hindustani Classical

These classes will introduce students to tabla as an instrument and the different connotations such as Syahi, Maidan, Dahina, Bahina etc. The curriculum will cover the following:

• The right sitting position in front of the Tabla for ease of playing
• Introduction to the basic Tabla notation
• Introduction to terms like Matra, Vibhag, Taali, Khaali, etc. to enable a clear understanding and interpretation of notations
• Basic exercises to get the feel of the tabla and to exercise the fingers
• Concept of Teen Taal, a 16-beat rhythmic cycle
• Practice elemental compositions in teen taal to get students accustomed to the emanating sound and finger movement
• Recital of different compositions vocally before moving ahead to practice it on the tabla

About the Teacher: Sunayana’s attraction to rhythm and beats started at an early age when she picked up learning the tabla at the tender age of six. Her mother, a vocalist, has significantly influenced the life of the gifted tabla player. 

Sunayna groomed her tabla playing skills, initially under the guidance of Samar Mitra and later under the renowned tabla exponent, late Pt. Shankar Ghosh of the Farrukhabad Gharana continued training under the guidance of his son tabla maestro Bikram Ghosh. 

Today Sunayana is a renowned female tabla player who has showcased her talent both in India and abroad. Sunayna’s talent is not restricted to just tabla, as she is trained in Kathak and vocals.
