This in-depth, 52-week course covers a range of topics and techniques related to playing, and mastering, the tabla. Students will become skilled at compositions such as kaida, rela, tukra, chakradar, gat, and chalan, and taals like teen taal, keharwa, dadra, jhaptaal, and laya. In addition to teaching technique for playing, Unmesh Banjeree will cover a brief history of various tabla gharanas and maestros, as well as vocabulary related to Indian classical music. He will also teach students the art of reciting Indian rhythm, which is essential to playing, and composing for, the tabla at an advanced level. These lessons provide students the opportunity to learn and grow as classical musicians.
Students will need to have their own tabla, understand the basics of playing, and have a desire to participate in live online learning with a highly experienced and talented teacher. Each student will benefit from Unmesh’s expertise and his willingness to tailor the course to his students’ background, age, and learning style—which increases retention and enjoyment for any student. The successful completion of this course will leave students with an established and thorough understanding of their craft, as well as the ability to play tabla like master.

About Unmesh Banerjee: As the child of prominent North Indian classical musicians, Unmesh Banjeree has been playing tabla almost his entire life. He began performing at age six and has been playing solos and accompaniment with prestigious artists across India since, including the Sangeet Research Academy and Kalashree Music Circle. Unmesh is an alum of St. Xavier’s Collegiate School, Kolkata and a recipient of the CCRT Scholarship for Young Musicians. He has a keen interest in fusion music, Carnatic rhythm, and challenging taalas and nadais. Unmesh endeavors to infuse interest and respect for this traditional art form in the hearts and minds of all his students.
