This course is an introduction to classical music for beginners in string instrumental music, best for those who have not played a string instrument before or are just beginning to learn. Students will begin by learning the different parts of their instrument and their significance, followed by how to properly hold the body and strike the strings. Once those basics are learned, students will be educated on sargam, the practice of singing the notes of a composition, as this increases the understanding of tones before playing them on the instrument. Finally, students will learn a selection of simple songs, like ‘Hum Honge Kamyab,’ and ragas of Indian classical music, such as Bilawal, Kafi, and Durga.
Students of Pt. Abhik Kumar Sarkar will have the opportunity to learn from an expert musician who has been playing and teaching Indian classical music for over 30 years. Mr. Sarkar’s guidance will allow students to move from beginning to intermediate ability during this short-term course and provide them with a technique they can build on.
