In this course, veena players have the opportunity to learn from one of the foremost exponents of the instrument, Dr. Suma Sudhindra. Students with some experience playing veena and/or South Indian Carnatic music will learn varnams, a variety of compositions, and specialized Carnatic musical techniques from a master with 35 years of professional experience. This course is best for students looking to enhance their playing or performance skills with the South Indian Saraswati veena.

Veena Course for Intermediate-to-Advanced Students expands on the existing knowledge and techniques of veena players, with an emphasis on South Indian Carnatic tradition. Highly customizable and tailored to each individual enrolled, this course focuses on building skills, methods, and repertoire so each student can reach their goals, whether professional or recreational. Lesson plans, timelines, and goals for the course will vary from student-to-student. Dr. Sudhindra will meet with students in the beginning to establish educational needs and goals.
Students will learn advanced varnams and compositions, increasing their knowledge of music as a veena artist, as well as specialized techniques unique to Dr. Sudhindra, as well as techniques in the style of the famous Veena Chitti Babu. The knowledge imparted in this course will improve the ability of any student who chooses to enroll.
ABOUT THE TEACHER: Dr. Suma Sudhindra’s reputation speaks for itself, an award-winning career spanning nearly four decades and multiple recorded albums, with no sign of stopping. An accomplished and talented veena exponent, Dr. Sudhindra employs a blend of classical conservatism and modern interpretation in the style of the iconic Emani Chitti Babu as she leads the next generation of veena artists. She has been the recipient of many prestigious awards, including the Rajyotsava Award from the Karnataka Government in 2001, and has performed extensively in India and abroad, including tours of Europe and the United States. The only prerequisite for this course is an understanding of veena basics and experience with playing varnams on the veena. Students must have their own instrument; any version of the veena will work, although the Saraswati veena is preferred in Carnatic style.
