This introductory 8-week course provides students with the fundamental knowledge necessary to start playing the ukulele quickly and effectively. During eight weekly 30-minute sessions, students learn basic techniques and playing styles. At the successful completion of this course, students will be able to play a piece on their ukulele, play along with other musicians, and move onto the next level of instruction. This course is designed to fit the needs of the learner and is great for students of all ages and skill levels.

Whether learning for fun or for professional development, experienced instructor Irwin Silbernik develops lessons designed to meet the needs and goals of the individual. He can teach students how to play songs and sing along with the grandkids or to perform a musical selection in public. Along with tailored instruction, the basics of playing ukulele are covered, including how to hold the instrument, how to execute strumming techniques, play chords, play along with music, and how to tune the instrument and care for it. Students also learn basic exercises to strengthen coordination, muscle memory, and positioning.
ABOUT THE TEACHER: Irwin Silbernik has been teaching guitar, piano, ukulele, mandolin, and music theory for decades. He has a talent for connecting with students and designing lessons to meet their diverse needs. Irwin has a true love of teaching and his compassionate and inspiring approach sets each student up for success. Irwin majored in piano and instrumental music education at both DePaul University and the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana. He played Timpani with the De Paul University Symphony Orchestra, which regularly performed in Chicago's Orchestra Hall. Irwin received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Illinois in 1974, and his Master's degree in Music Education a year later, in 1975.
