Q: How do I decide my pitch?

The teacher will evaluate your voice quality and set the right pitch for you.

Q: I am not able to hold my breath for a long time while singing. As a result, I go out of tune. How can this course help me?

Vocal training is the best breathing exercise. These exercises will not only help to enhance your voice quality, it will also increase your lung capacity. If you practice regularly for at least 20 minutes, you will have better control of your breath. In the process, you will also learn, how to steal breath while singing without letting your listeners know about it. All of it comes with practice.

Q: My voice hurts while singing at a high pitch. Can I do this course?

Perhaps you are singing on the wrong pitch. Discuss with your teacher and find the right pitch for your voice.

Q: How much time should a student devote to self-practice on a daily basis?

This course will require practice time outside of lessons. Time spent practicing may vary from 15 minutes per day to an hour, depending on a student’s level of interest. Students who wish to become professional singers will need more hours of practice per day using a different set of exercises and materials than students who are seeking to learn music as a hobby. A detailed structure for home practice for each student will be discussed and explained during class.

Q: What if a student is unable to attend an upcoming class?

The student is required to inform the teacher about his/her absence from a particular session, two days prior to the class. In such a case, the teacher will reschedule the class and conduct the rescheduled class on or before the end (i.e. Saturday) of the ensuing week or such other time as may be mutually decided between the teacher and the student. In case the student misses to give two days prior notice about his/her absence to the teacher, then the decision to conduct another class for that student is completely based on the teacher’s discretion.

Q: How long will a teacher take to revert to students’ queries after class hours?

Students should get a response within 24 hours if the teacher is not preoccupied or traveling.

Q: What if the teacher wishes to reschedule a class?

If the teacher is unavailable for the scheduled class, he/she will inform the students two days before the class. The teacher will conduct the rescheduled class on or before the end (i.e. Saturday) of the ensuing week or such other time as may be mutually decided between the teacher and the student.

Janani Kamakshi hails from a musical family with a profound lineage. Her late grandfather is the esteemed Shri Tanjore S Kalyanaraman, whose legacy resonates in her musical journey. She received invaluable guidance and training from her grandmother and esteemed guru, Smt. Visalakshi Suryanarayanan. Additionally, she has learned Hindustani music from various gurus such as Shri Brijbhushan ji in Mumbai, who provided her with dedicated voice training. Through these remarkable experiences and training under such distinguished mentors, Janani has nurtured her musical talent.

With profound knowledge and versatility acquired from her training in both Hindustani and Carnatic music, Janani evolved into a fine professional playback singer and songwriter. She is also an acclaimed winner of many reality shows on South Indian Television such as Hari Udan Naan & Raagamalika. Moreover, she has also sung with such well-renowned singers as Shri Hariharan and Shri S. P. Balasubrahmanyam.
