About the Course
Apart from thoroughly revising the fundamentals of playing the Mridangam, students will explore the following concepts:
- Different patterns and Nadai
- New Gathis (namely Thisra, Khanda, Mishra, Sankeerna
- Different rhythmic compositions Korvai, Mohra, and Muktayam) at different speeds
- Accompaniment for songs of different Talas
- Understanding complex rhythmic patterns and making your own rhythmic compositions
About the Teacher: Sunil Subramanyan was drawn to the art of percussion as a child. He hails from a family with deep roots in music, particularly in the Bhajana Sampradaya. He started his initial training at the age of 10, under his father Sri Subramanyan and Sri Sringeri Ramachandra Rao. Then he came under the tutelage of Mridangam Maestro Vidwan Bangalore Arjun Kumar.
Sunil has taken advanced training from VID. Sangeetha Kalanidhi, Sri Umayalapuram sivaraman. He has been giving concerts at esteemed Sabhas and music festivals all over India. He has been training many students in India and abroad.
Sunil is an ‘A’ graded artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan. He is the recipient of the CMANA (Carnatic Music Asociation of North America) award from the percussive arts centre Bangalore for the year 2017. And “Ananya Yuva Puraskara” for the year 2019. With a conventional training background in the Vedas, he has completed his Master's Degree in English.
