This course will include practice in talas and expand the students’ understanding of applying the rhythm of these talas to mridangam playing. As students learn to apply the talas (the three, four, five, and seven beat cycles used in the Carnatic music system) to their music, their innate ability to tap into the rhythm of sound will strengthen as well. Balaji will work with students to develop their ear for rhythm through guided practices, suggested listening and demonstrations. While it takes years of practice and dedication to master Mridangam rhythm, this course provides the educational foundation upon which musicians will build their unique style.

As the third course in a series, it is a prerequisite that students complete Bombay C N Balaji’s Introduction to Mridangam before enrollment. Students must have paper and pen to take notes, as well as their own mridangam. Before enrollment, students must ensure they are prepared to make the time commitment necessary to not only promptly attend online sessions, but also practice independently throughout the week.
