This course is designed for learners who have mastered the fundamental concepts of Kathak and come with 2-3 years of prior training in Kathak. Ace performer and experienced teacher, Sangita Chatterjee takes the learning experience of the students to the next level. Both the theoretical and practical concepts are taught in explicit detail making each and every body movement, footwork, expression, sense of rhythm, etc, more refined and graceful.
Before the classes commence, the mentor of this course - Sangita Chatterjee will assess your dance skills and grasping abilities and customize the curriculum and teaching methodology accordingly.

After internalizing the concept of Teentaal (16-beat time cycle) at the beginner’s level, at the intermediate level, the students will learn Jhaptaal (ten beats time cycle).
The lessons that the students have learned at the beginner level will become more elaborate at the intermediate level. For example, they will learn the Tukdas in Jhaptaal in a more elaborate way.

These are all technical aspects of Kathak. Any kind of dance is divided into two parts - Nritta and Nritya. Nritta is the technical part whereas Nritya is dance with abhinaya.
In Kathak training, the students are first taught the technical part of Kathak. Taal is a very important part of Kathak. And side by side the students learn the nritya which is the art of storytelling with the abhinaya.
When it comes to Nritya, understanding 9 Rasas becomes very significant. The 9 Rasas include - Shringara, Hasya, Karuna, Raudra, Veera, Bhayanaka, Bibhatsa, Adbutha, and Shantha.
The students learn to perform Guru Vandana and Ganesh Vandana in Jhaptaal.
About the Teacher
Sangita Chatterjee, the disciple of Guru Smt. Vaswati Misra, is a young, dynamic, and eminent exponent of Kathak, from Lucknow Gharana. Sangita has emerged as a soloist of par excellence and has made her niche as a thinking dancer whose approach toward dance is beyond mere performative presentation.
She has orchestrated several dance programs that include a solo dance theatre production - "Yagyaseni" on Draupadi's life, a multi-dance style presentation - "Hridoy Majhe Bangla", - in the presence of the then President of India, Late Shri Pranav Mukherjee, Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, and other political dignitaries.
She has choreographed “Ramayan” in collaboration with Japanese dancers which she presented in Tokyo National Theatre, Japan. She has also traveled extensively to different countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and America for her performances.
During the lockdown, she has also created two short films "Quest - A Lockdown Diary of a Dancer" and 'Mirage- A Lust for Life" which were also featured in INMOTION Dance Film Festival Chicago. Sangita is an empaneled artist of ICCR, SPICMACAY & Ministry of Culture and awarded with Sringar Mani, Jayadev Samman, Woman Achievers Award, etc.
