Course Summary

This course is a simple and fun introduction to the beautiful world of Indian classical music. Whether you're completely new or know a little about music, this course will help you learn the basics of Indian classical music and its two traditions.

You will start by learning the key concepts like Raga (melody), Tala (rhythmic patterns), and Swaras (notes). Once you're comfortable with basic Swaras and Talas, we’ll move on to teaching you small compositions in different ragas. These short pieces are very important because they help you understand the connection between raga, tala, and the core ideas of Indian classical music.

As you progress, advanced lessons will include exploring ragas in detail (Swar Vistar), practicing fast melodic patterns (Taan), understanding rhythmic variations (Laykari), and learning unique ragas like Jod Ragas.

This step-by-step approach ensures you build a strong foundation and grow into the rich tradition of Indian classical music.

About the Course

In this course, you will learn -

  • A brief introduction to Indian classical music and its two main traditions: Hindustani from North India and Carnatic from South India. Both traditions are based on the concepts of raga (melody) and tala (rhythmic patterns), which form the foundation of compositions.
  • The seven notes, called swaras—Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, and Ni—are arranged in the musical scale or octave. Rhythmic cycles, known as tala, create patterns of beats that guide compositions and improvisations.
  • Arohana is the upward flow of notes in a raga, while avarohana is the downward flow. Practical exercises involve singing or playing these patterns to build fluency.
  • For vocal practice, riyaaz includes techniques like alankars (variations in rhythm and melody), sargam practice (singing or playing notes in patterns), and exercises to improve pitch and tone.
  • Improvisation in raga and tala allows creative exploration. Beginners can start with alaap, a slow introduction to a raga, and progress to taan, faster melodic patterns.
  • This course provides the foundation for learning Indian classical music through regular practice and understanding of its key elements.
