This course is designed for beginners who want to explore Hindustani classical singing. You do not need any prior experience, just an interest in music and a willingness to learn. The course will introduce you to the beautiful world of Indian classical music in a simple and enjoyable way.
Here is what you will learn -
In the first few sessions, you will learn about the seven musical notes (Swaras) – Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, and Ni. You will also understand octaves and how to sing in different pitch ranges. There will be fun exercises to improve your voice and breath control. You will also practice Aakar, which means singing notes with the sound "Aa." Add points. You will also learn Paltas and a few challenging Alankars for vocal exercises.
Next, you will be introduced to rhythm, which is called Taal in Indian music. You will learn about Teen Taal, a common rhythmic cycle, and how to clap and recite its beats. You will also practice singing with a Tanpura, a special instrument that helps you stay in tune. These exercises will help you develop a steady voice and good pitch.
Once you are comfortable with the basics, you will start learning Ragas. A Raga is a set of notes that create a melody. The first Raga you will learn is Raga Bhupali, which is one of the easiest and most beautiful Ragas for beginners. You will practice slow melodic phrases (Alaap), simple note patterns (Swar Vistar), and a small classical composition called Bandish. You will also try singing fast note patterns (Taan) in a simple way.
After learning Raga Bhupali, you will explore another Raga called Yaman. This Raga has a simple and soothing melody. You will learn how to sing its ascending and descending patterns and practice a short Bandish in Bhupali. Singing exercises will help improve your vocal strength and confidence.
As you progress, you will learn how to express emotions through singing. You will practice using lyrics in melodic phrases (Bol Aalap) and try singing faster patterns with words (Bol Taan). You will also focus on breath control and improving your voice quality.
Towards the end of the course, you will prepare for a small performance. You will practice presenting a full Raga with Alaap, Bandish, and basic improvisation. You will also learn simple devotional songs (Bhajans) and light classical compositions. This will help you feel more confident while singing.
Throughout the course, you will receive personal feedback and easy exercises to practice at home. You will also listen to recordings of famous classical singers to understand how music is performed. If you are learning online, recorded lessons will be available for revision.
By the end of this course, you will be able to sing simple Ragas, recognize musical patterns, and enjoy the process of learning classical music. This is just the beginning of your musical journey, and you will be ready to explore more Ragas and improve your singing further.
