Indian Classical Vocal Lessons for Beginners

Q: How much time should a student enrolling for this course practice everyday?

This course will require practice time outside of lessons. Time spent practicing may vary from 15 minutes per day to an hour, depending on the student’s level of interest. Students who wish to become professional musicians will need more hours of practice per day using a different set of exercises and materials than students who are seeking to learn music as a hobby. Detailed structure of practice for each student will be discussed and explained during class.

Q: What if a student is unable to attend an upcoming class?

The student is required to inform the teacher about his absence from a particular session, two days prior to the class. In such a case, the teacher will reschedule the class and conduct the rescheduled class on or before the end (i.e. Saturday) of the ensuing week or such other time as may be mutually decided between the teacher and the student. In case the student misses to give two days prior notice about his absence to the teacher, then the decision to conduct another class for that student is completely based on teacher’s discretion.

Q: What if the teacher wishes to reschedule a class?

In case the teacher is unavailable for the scheduled class, he/she will inform the students two days prior to the class. The teacher will conduct the rescheduled class on or before the end (i.e. Saturday) of the ensuing week or such other time as may be mutually decided between the teacher and the student.

Q: How long will the teacher take to revert to a query raised after class hours?

Students should get a response within 24 hours if the teacher is not preoccupied or travelling.

About the Course

This course is for beginners who want to learn Hindustani classical vocal music. Taught by renowed vocalist of Kirana Gharana "Surmani' Arati Thakur-Kundalkar, students will gain a foundational understanding of how to sing, how to produce good voice, Swaras. After the successful completion of this course students can expect to understand and be able to sing all 12 natural notes and some basic ragas. Students will also learn basic Swar and Alankaras.

Students will be introduced to notes like Shuddha, Komal and Teevra, Chhota Khyal (small drut compositions) in raagas like Bhoop, Durga, Sarang, Des, Khamaj etc. Further, the students will also be given basic introduction to the taal system. Arati Ji has been teaching students in Semi-Classical and Hindustani Classical music for over 20 years and also teaches music online and holds the title of Guru on the panel of 'Lalit Kala Kendra' (Centre for Performing Arts- Pune University).

About the Teacher: Arati Thakur-Kundalkar Ji is coming to the fore in Hindustani classical music and is one of the young trailblazers of ‘Kirana Gharana’. At the age of nine, Arati Ji showed a keen interest in music and began music lessons under the expert vocalist of Kirana Gharana, Late Smt. Leelatai Gharpure. She later pursued further instruction from Padmabhushan Dr. Prabha Atre Ji and was guided by musicologist and harmonium maestro Dr. Arawind Thatte. Arati Ji has completed an M.A. in music from S.N.D.T. University where she is a high-rank holder of the university and was awarded the very prestigious ‘Gaan Heera' Puraskar. She holds the title of Sangeet Visharad in Hindustani music from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. Arati Ji is also a graded artist of AIR for light music and classical vocal. Arati Ji has received a multitude of coveted awards as well as scholarships, most notably Paingankar Puraskar, Sudha Sindhu Puraskar, Parundekar Puraskar, Sur Mani Award and Late Pramilabai Deshpande Puraskar.
