This course focuses on a holistic, hands-on approach to teaching that combines practical exercises, theoretical understanding, and personalized feedback.
Here is a detailed curriculum for this course -
1. Basic Warm-Up Exercises
Each session will start with vocal warm-ups and scale-based exercises. Gradually you will be introduced to exercises to stretch the vocal cords and prepare the voice for singing. The emphasis will be on posture and relaxation techniques to ensure a comfortable singing experience.
2. Breathing Techniques
You will learn diaphragmatic breathing through step-by-step demonstrations and guided practice. Breath control exercises will be taught, such as holding notes and transitioning smoothly between phrases.
You will learn the practical applications of these breathing techniques during song practice to highlight the importance of breath support.
3. Modulation Techniques
Your teacher will demonstrate various modulation styles used in Bollywood playback singing, such as shifting dynamics and emotional expressions. You study popular songs to understand how modulation enhances storytelling in music. You will learn specific exercises to practice controlled changes in volume and tone.
4. Range, Pitch, and Timing Control
In this, we will begin with exercises to identify and expand each student’s vocal range. This will be followed by practicing pitch accuracy using scales and interval recognition. Your teacher will conduct rhythm and timing exercises, including clapping and singing along to a metronome.
5. Indian Semi-Classical Techniques
In this section you will be introduced to beautiful ornamentation methods like ‘gamakas’ and ‘’meends through traditional semi-classical compositions. To help you see how these techniques are applied in Bollywood music, we will explore iconic songs influenced by semi-classical styles. You will be encouraged to experiment with these elements in your own singing, allowing you to add a new dimension to your performances.
6. Foundational Concepts of Ragas and Alankars
In these sessions we will focus on introducing you to basic ragas frequently used in Bollywood music, such as Yaman and Kafi, while explaining their distinct mood and application. You’ll practice alankars (vocal exercises) that will help you gain fluency in patterns and improve your control over notes and rhythm. To boost your creativity, you’ll be guided to improvise within the framework of these ragas.

Anupam Bhattacharya is a singer, musician, seasoned performer, and teacher. He is involved in music production in collaboration with other artists. He teaches vocal music to students coming from different skill levels (from beginners to advanced level) from India and abroad.
Anupam has received several awards and accolades for his vocal skills at several prestigious platforms. He secured first position at the National Level in the Hindustani Light Music category at Kerala Samajam Durg and Nrityudham Sangeet Kala Samiti, Bhilai.
